Dori Engel is an actor and theatre director, born in Israel in 1978 and currently based in Tel Aviv.
After studying acting at Tel Aviv University and RADA, London, Dori performed at many theatres in Israel, as well as in the UK, France, Canada, Germany, Poland, Romania, Scotland and Cyprus. Among his main roles: the title role in Hamlet, Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, Didi in Waiting for Godot, Joseph K. in The Trial, and more.
In 2010 he started directing, both as an independent creator-producer and in various Israeli theatres, such as the Yiddish National Theatre, Jaffa Theatre, HaNephesh Theatre and Elmina Theatre. His recent works include the bi-lingual Romeo & Juliet (in Arabic and Hebrew), which toured in Germany in 2022, and the youth performance Two on One Roof, which won the ASSITEJ (the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) prize for best interdisciplinary show in 2019, The Trial by Kafka, Sinn by Anja Hilling, and Schneider and Schuster by Joshua Sobol.
In his creations for the stage, Dori often works with classical texts, with a specific passion for Shakespeare. Among his Shakespeare-based works are Youth & Will,  which deals with dilemmas of youth in Shakespeare (with rave reviews in London and at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe); Knockout,  which brings relationships between men and women, in Shakespeare’s plays and today, to a boxing ring; and the monodrama I, Shakespeare,  that imagines the Bard’s personal life story and his relationship with the characters he created.
With his art, Dori aims to promote cultural diversity and differing viewpoints, both through themes in his shows, and by promoting international artistic collaborations. Dori is the founder and artistic director of the International Shakespeare Fringe Festival, which took place at the Tmu-na Theatre in Tel Aviv in 2015, 2016, 2017.
Dori creates and performs in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. He sees it as a mission to preserve the Yiddish language and the legacy of Yiddish song and theatre.
