Romeo and Juliet is a production of the Arab-Hebrew Theatre in Jaffa.
* The production is bi-lingual, mixing Arabic and Hebrew (with subtitles).
Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s immortal play, deals with young, innocent love that spans both sides of a political bloody conflict.
For us, living in Israel-Palestine, it is almost inevitable to connect the play in our imagination to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. When we think of a young Palestinian guy and a young Jewish-Israeli girl who fall in love, the dramatic tension immediately becomes real for us, and the words of the play echo on multiple layers.
A mixed group of Jewish and Palestinian artists joined together to co-create this production, using it as a way to express our views about the conflict, our pain, our hopes and our fears.
Especially these days, with political discourse becoming more racist and violent and with questions in the air about the freedom of art and speech, we find it crucial to expose the core of burning issues regarding our life together in this country, and to deal boldly with the impact of the occupation, war crimes, and racism on our life.
Through the words of Shakespeare, we can connect and find our voice while creating something together, Jews and Palestinians, meeting each other as human beings, and allowing ourselves to express our longing for a different future here for our children. Is there a chance for love and beauty in a land full of blood?
